Romen Chandra has always been vocal against BJP’s hardline communal politics and unjust policies of government in Assam: Rajesh Sharma

  • July 3, 2024

Senior Assam Pradesh Congress leader Romen Chandra Borthakur joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday. He is a very popular leader among the people of Assam and has been raising people’s issues by joining Assam Congress for the last 23 years. Senior AAP leader and cabinet minister Atishi and party’s North-East in-charge Rajesh Sharma welcomed him by felicitating him with a party cap and sash. Romen Chandra has been a spokesperson as well as the former general secretary and in-charge of Assam State Congress and has contested the assembly elections against Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma in 2021. Atishi said that Romen Chandra has been constantly raising his voice against the corruption and bulldozer politics of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. The AAP has always got the love and trust of the people of Assam. Romen Chandra’s joining the AAP family will strengthen the party in Assam.

Senior AAP leader and Cabinet Minister Atishi on Wednesday held a press conference at the party headquarters and welcomed senior Assam Congress leader Romen Chandra Borthakur into the AAP. Welcoming Romen Chandra Borthakur into the party, she said that it is a matter of great joy for us that Romen Chandra Borthakur, who has been a senior Congress leader in Assam for 23 years, is joining us. He has been the General Secretary of Assam PCC, Senior Spokesperson and In-charge of Assam Congress. He had also contested the 2021 election from Jalukbari Assembly against the current Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sharma. Romen Chandra Borthakur has been continuously raising his voice against the corruption and ‘Bulldozer Politics’ of Himanta Biswa Sharma. He has decided to join the AAP after seeing the work of the AAP and the beginning of the party in Assam.

Atishi stated, “The people of Assam have always given a lot of love and trust to the AAP. Earlier, it was believed that the AAP is a Delhi party in North India, but the people of Assam have consistently shown trust in us. In the Guwahati Municipal Corporation elections, the AAP won 1 seat and stood second on 24 seats. The AAP has a significant presence in Tinsukia and Lakhimpur Municipal Corporations. In this Lok Sabha election, we have made a good start in Assam. We are very happy that Romen Chandra Borthakur is leaving the Congress Party and joining the AAP. We heartily welcome him to the AAP.”

Rajesh Sharma, in-charge of the North Western states of the AAP, said, “Romen Chandra Borthakur is a well-known face in Assam. He has always spoken out against the fanatic communal politics and misgovernance of the BJP. Romen Chandra Borthakur has always raised the voice of the common people while being in the Congress Party for 23 years. He has always supported the movements of the AAP. Recently, he came in contact with us and, impressed by the politics of work of CM Arvind Kejriwal, he expressed his desire to join the AAP. We welcome him to the AAP family and hope that together we will establish the AAP as a strong party serving the people in Assam politics.”

Romen Chandra Borthakur expressed his gratitude by felicitating Atishi and Rajesh Sharma with traditional Assamese scarves (Gamosa) and bouquets. He stated that the AAP has contributed a lot to the development of Assam. I have always opposed the corruption of Congress and the BJP. In 2021, I contested against BJP CM Himanta Biswa Sharma. But I have been subjected to a lot of injustice while contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Guwahati in 2019 and 2024. Therefore, I have decided to join the AAP and work under the leadership of CM Arvind Kejriwal. I want to work for the development of Assam.

“At present, Assam is facing the disaster of floods. Therefore, I urge the AAP to help the people of Assam through crowdfunding. I will serve the people of Assam throughout my life by staying in the AAP,” he concluded.
